About SPayLater Promotional Messaging

This page explains the concepts behind the SPayLater Promotional Widget — what promotional messaging is, where it can be placed, what it looks like to customers, and the compliance rules that apply. For step-by-step installation instructions, see the Android, iOS, or Website guides.

What is promotional messaging?

Promotional messaging is the "Buy Now, Pay Later with SPayLater" copy and instalment pricing (e.g. "As low as Rp 150,000/mth with SPayLater") that the widget displays next to your product prices. It appears automatically wherever you install the widget — Homepage, Category pages, or Product Detail Pages (PDP) — without the customer needing to click anything first.

The goal is simple: customers decide whether they can afford something based on the price they see right now. If all they see is the full price, some will hesitate or abandon their cart. Promotional messaging reframes that price as a smaller, more manageable instalment, at the exact moment the customer is deciding whether to buy.

Why merchants use it

BenefitHow it happens
Higher conversionCustomers who might bounce at a high sticker price see an affordable monthly instalment instead
Higher average order value (AOV)Instalments make higher-priced items feel accessible, encouraging upsells and bundle purchases
Awareness without extra effortThe widget renders itself — no design or copywriting work needed from your team
Trust signalA recognizable "Buy Now, Pay Later with SPayLater" badge reassures customers that instalments are a legitimate, ShopeePay-backed option

Why there's no personalized prequalification

Some Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) providers run a prequalification flow — a soft check that returns a customer-specific decision ("you're likely approved for $X") before checkout. SPayLater's widget does not do this.

Instead, the instalment figures shown in the widget are calculated from a default rate that is fixed per market and applied uniformly to every merchant in that market. The same tenor options and rate assumptions are used regardless of which customer is viewing the page or which merchant is displaying the widget.

This keeps the widget simple and safe to display to any customer, including those who haven't onboarded to SPayLater yet — there's no personalized credit decision to get wrong, and no customer-specific data flows through the widget at all.

Placement guidance

Where you place promotional messaging changes what it needs to accomplish:

PlacementPurposeMessaging style
HomepageBuild broad awareness that SPayLater exists as a payment optionGeneral banner: "Buy Now Pay Later with SPayLater" — no price shown
Category / listing pageNudge customers while they're still comparing optionsShort instalment line per item: "As low as [amount]/mth with SPayLater"
Product page (PDP)Convert customers who are close to buyingInstalment line under the price + an ⓘ info icon opening the full tenor breakdown
Cart pageReinforce the instalment option right before checkoutSame as PDP
  • Put the widget as close to the price as possible — customers should never have to hunt for it.
  • Don't place promotional messaging on pages where SPayLater isn't actually accepted at checkout.
  • Homepage messaging is the easiest starting point; PDP messaging drives the most conversion but requires the most setup.

What the widget looks like

A quick look at how promotional messaging appears to customers, by placement and platform.

Mobile (iOS & Android)

Homepage — a promotional banner introduces "Buy Now, Pay Later with SPayLater" to build awareness before customers start browsing.

Category / listing page — a short instalment price line appears under each item, nudging customers as they browse.

Cart page — the same messaging reinforces the instalment option at checkout (optional placement).

Tapping the info icon opens a pop-up listing every available instalment plan (e.g. 3 / 6 / 12 months) with the monthly payment amount, calculated at the market's default rate.

Website (PC)

Customer flow

Here is how a customer experiences SPayLater promotional messaging from first impression to completed purchase:

  1. Customer sees the widget. While browsing your store, the customer sees "Buy Now, Pay Later with SPayLater" messaging next to your product prices — on your Homepage, Category pages, or Product Detail Pages. No interaction is needed; the message appears automatically.
  2. Customer explores instalment options. On a Product page, the customer taps or clicks the ⓘ info icon next to the instalment line. A pop-up opens listing every available plan (e.g. 3 / 6 / 12 months) and the monthly payment amount, calculated at the market's default rate.
  3. Customer proceeds to checkout. The customer adds the item to their cart and checks out as normal. SPayLater appears as one of the accepted payment methods.
  4. Customer pays in instalments. The customer selects SPayLater at merchant checkout, which redirects them to the ShopeePay or Shopee app to choose their preferred instalment plan. Once confirmed, the purchase is complete and subsequent payments follow the chosen plan schedule.

Compliance requirements for merchants

Because promotional messaging touches consumer credit, every market has advertising and lending-disclosure rules that apply. Before going live, confirm the following with your ShopeePay account manager and your own Legal/Compliance team:

  1. No guaranteed-approval language. Copy must never state or imply that a customer is guaranteed to be approved for SPayLater or for a specific limit. Since figures are calculated from a market-wide default rate, not a personal quote, they must always read as representative ("As low as...") rather than a promise made to that specific customer.
  2. SPayLater must be a live, accepted payment method on your store before you enable the widget. Advertising an option customers can't actually use at checkout is a compliance and trust issue.
  3. Representative example disclosure. Because every figure is based on the market default rate rather than a customer-specific quote, all instalment amounts must be clearly presented as illustrative examples, not personal offers.
  4. Local review before launch. Financial promotion wording is subject to market-specific regulatory review. Do not modify the widget's default copy — it is centrally reviewed and localized by ShopeePay per market. If you need custom placement copy outside the widget's defaults, route it through your account manager for Legal sign-off first.
